Choir Loss

Well, my negative thinking has prevailed. I thought I was a bad singer, therefore I am.

My instructor told me I have to drop out (aka he kicked me out) of choir because I can’t match pitch with everyone else. Which pretty much means I can’t sing. I wasn’t expecting it because I didn’t think I was THAT bad, but maybe I am. You would think singing in chorus for about 10 years would make me decent; guess not.

Now that’s fine, I’m not upset or anything, I know how it goes, but now I have a dilemma:

  1. I’m only taking one class now, so I spend a half an hour on gas to goto one class, twice a week.
  2. What class can I take instead?

Oh well, it’ll all work out. I’m not too concerned, but I just wasn’t expecting it.

    Hi Andrew.
    I think it’s great that you took the initiative to go out and join a choir. Now you have learned that singing may not be your core passion. You can always explore other interests. You will be as talented as you believe you can be. Everyone can always improve, even on their strengths. This is part of what makes learning exciting. Why not brainstorm some things that interest you. Then, investigate and discover what other options you have.
    Readers will look forward to hearing about your choices and your evolution, By the way, I would highly recommend “Everyday Greatnes” with Insights and Commentary by Stephen Covey (2006). It contains stories about normal, somewhat ordinary people, who redefined different goals and purposes in their lives. It’s very uplifting and may offer ideas.

    Being able to match pitch is a skill you can learn with good vocal instruction. Consider finding yourself a teacher who understands that intonation has almost everything to do with feelings and breath support, and little to do with ears. Do not let your motivation be stomped on.

    Thanks for support. I can eventually match pitch, in about a second or two of messing around. I’m more often flat than I am sharp. I know I can do it, it’s just not automatic.
